Plant Genetic Engineering Lab (PGEL) was established in 2005 within the Department of Biotechnology, Bharathiar University. The thrust areas of the lab are Plant Molecular Farming, Metabolic Engineering and DNA Barcoding. DBT, DST, DRDO, UGC, TNSCST, ICMR, CSIR and UKIERI support the lab through extramural project funding. PGEL has collaborations with reputed International institutions like St. George’s University of London, UK, University of Evora, Portugal, University of Guelph, Canada and Mizoram University, Mizoram, MS University, Tirunelveli at National level. The Lab is running a consultancy project with Himalaya Drug, GreenChem, Arjuna Natural Extracts and Indus Biotech for authentication of medicinal plants using DNA Barcoding technique.
